WB Alloy Welding Products Ltd design, manufacture and supply a range of high quality, high integrity products and solutions, for both welding and cutting applications, to the Oil and Gas, Nuclear, Marine, Renewables, Power Generation and Construction sectors. They also provide innovative augmented reality welding training and upskilling.
The Challenge
WB Alloys approached the Supply Chain AeroSpace team with a two-fold challenge. Firstly, they were keen to further develop engagement within the aerospace and space sectors. Secondly, due to an expansion of their augmented reality welding technology training capability, they were looking to develop a progressive training package that would allow them to move forward with industry.
The Solutions
Aerospace and Space Engagement
The SCA team introduced WBA to a space rocket Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) which had a particular issue with welding pipe structures in their rocket motor assembly. WBA provided a solution for manual welding, including a proposal to take forward the possibility of developing robotic welding of the product. This would ensure better consistency, reducing the possibility of porosity and welding non-conformances. The automated welding would provide higher welding speeds, therefore reduce cycling times. This engagement with an OEM space company has enabled WBA to promote company growth within the space sector.
Aerospace and Space Sector Training
WBA’s innovative augmented reality based welding training capability provides welding technology and techniques training to clients. This capability has now been expanded to include in-house classroom facilities, as well as workshop space dedicated to teaching.
In conjunction with our sister project Skypath Aero Training Centre, we helped WBA to develop a training package which allowed them to support new purpose trained welders and up-skill existing welders. As a result, WBA is progressing and growing their welding school business within the space, traditional and advanced manufacturing sectors.
“The experience we have both benefited from and gained whilst working with the SCA project accelerated the impact of these business development strategies. We continue to use the learning and look forward to working with the SCA project team in future.”
